How To Start A Blog

Want to know how to start a blog in 2021, from choosing your niche to buying a hosting and a domain?

Worry not you are in the right place. Starting a blog might seem very daunting and hard especially with all the conflicting advice out there.

So In this guide, we will show you how to:

  • Choose A Niche
  • Buy Hosting & Domain
  • And Set Your Blog Up For Max Performance.

Sounds Cool?

Let’s dive right in.

Choose A Niche For Your Blog

Do you know why a lot of bloggers quit blogging within the first 6-8 months?

Because they choose the wrong niche.

They dive into any niche without even taking a moment to research it thoroughly.

But in reality, it doesn’t work that way.

If you start a blog just by looking at the monthly searches and the amount of traffic without analysing the competitors who rank on Google, then you are already putting yourself on the back foot.

If you want to make sure that your blog grows and generates income then you have to go beyond search volume.

Choosing the correct niche for yourself can reap huge benefits. Just take a look at these people & Their blogs.

  • Smart Passive Income :- This Blog by Pat Flynn, is one of the best around. It teaches you about Making passive money and living the life of your dreams.

At present, he is making over $200,000 dollars a month from affiliate commissions.

(In Dollars)

  • ShoutMeLoud: If you are a blogger and don’t know about ShoutMeLoud then it is like being a fan of the avengers and not being familiar with Captain America.

Harsh Agarwal started a blog on SEO and WordPress for Newbies, with the aim of helping them start & grow their blogs and help them BTOB (Be their own boss).

And this paved off, as he is making more than $40000 per month from Affiliate Marketing & his own products.

To choose a niche you have to follow 4 steps;

  1. Brainstorm & Generate Ideas.
  2. Gather Difficulty & Passion Metrics
  3. Check Your Monetization Potential
  4. Check content potential

#1 Brainstorm & Generate Ideas

So you need a niche…

But how do you know where to get into?

Well, at this point of time you need to think & brainstorm as many niche ideas as possible. Don’t limit yourself now you just think and get out as much ideas as possible, you will eventually filter those Niche ideas 🙂

But the question is,

HOW DO YOU BRAINSTORM THESE NICHE IDEAS IN THE FIRST PLACE?

Well, if you just stare at a wall, it won’t come out.

Rather you should take a data-driven approach. (And that’s what we are going to show you).

#1 Use ExplodingTopics

Okay, this is the first tactic that we will use to find out an niche which is

  • Less competitive
  • Has a high demand
  • And In which you will enjoy creating content.

The first step is to go to explodingtopics.com (This tool is created by one of our favorite SEO’s Brian Dean)

Explode 1

Then use the filters to weed out irrelevant topics.

Let’s say we were to create a brand new blog in the “Pets” category. Then we would just alter the Filters to Something like this;

Note: We set the time to 1 year because we want the tool to show us the Topics that have grown in popularity in the last year according to their database.

And this will give us awesome niche ideas backed by data.

#2 Amazon Tracking Domain Hunts.

Note: We learned this cool little hack from the guys at AuthorityHacker and we loved it so much that we decided to mention it.

#2 Filtering Out The Niche Ideas

So you have a lot of Niche ideas and your mind is boggling now with amazing ideas and stuff.

But here’s the deal;

If you are a newbie and are just starting out then you should not create more then 1 blog at a time.

Why you might ask?

Because you are a newbie and when you are a newbie you will make mistakes and get overwhelmed quite often.

So If you have multiple sites you are eventually going to get bored and leave blogging at the worst.

You Need to get into a niche where you have the perfect mix of Profitability, Knowledge and Passion.

First of all create an spreadsheet in Google Sheets which looks like this;

Now one by one we will be going over what each coloum in this Spreadsheet means and what to do with it.

Niche Name

This Is Where You Will type in your niche name.

Difficulty

This is the difficulty/competition in the niche. This can be an metric to seperate competitive & easy niches.

You can use the Ahrefs Keyword Difficulty Checker to measure this diiculty.

Just put in your niche name;

Put that difficulty in your Spreadsheet.

Traffic

In this colom you will fill in the amount of traffic you can expect if you start in that niche.

To take out the value of the metric go to semrush.

And plugin the name of your competitors. (Here’s how to find your competitors)

Go to google and search for a broad keyword in your niche like “Dog Food”

And take note of the domains in the Search results.

Paste those domains one by one and find out their traffic.

Now Do the math yourself and find out the Average Traffic for all the niches you have brainstormed and note that number down into the respective traffic columns.

Do I Like It?

This Is Based on you.

If you like it then type in YES and if you don’t put in No.

There’s Nothing Else Here.

Monetization

This is a very important metric when choosing your niche. It can make or break your entire carrer.

Below are some ways you can check the monetization potential of your niche.

Look At Other Blogs (How they make money)

This is a surefire way to find out the best monetization oppurtunities for your blog.

If someone is using a monetization method heavily then chances are that it works and converts for them very well.

So just look around the blogs of your competitors and you will surely find some Awesome monetization oppurtunities for you.

Here, create and go creates courses and sells them. It’s a Monetization method that we could potentially go for, and as Create and Go is a very popular blog in our niche We would suggest that this probably converts.

Checkout For Affiliate Offers

Affiliate Marketing is where you amplify and promote other people’s products and get a commission in return whenever somebody buys from them.

Read More About Affiliate Marketing Here.

You can just go to google and type in search strings like;

"Niche" + Affiliate Programs

And by typing that you can find tons of Affiliate Programs In Your Niche which you can potentially promote and make money off.

Expenses And Efforts

Believe it or not.

Some niches are harder to work in than others.

And this metric depends totally on you. If you can cope up with the pressure and can give in the work required then the effort metric should be GOOD.

Here are some questions you can ask yourself when coming up with the answer to how much effort I have to give in.

Also, you will need to invest in some tools which we will cover up later in the post 😀

Revenue Potential

This will be the amount of revenue you can generate if you start a blog in that niche.

Finding this is quite easy.

First, you search for a keyword in your niche

Then copy paste the URLs and plug them into Ubersuggest.

This will open a report like this;

Then go to the Top Pages section on the left.

And then search for your page (The one which you copied)

Take note of the number on the Est. Visits Coloum, this is the traffic this page is getting from Google.

This report will show you how much traffic the top-ranking pages get in that niche.

And If you have that number then you can find out the revenue you can make in that specific niche.

As the average conversion rate is 1% (It’s An Estimation)

The math to find out the revenue generated by that page would be;

0.01 x 300621 = 3006

That means 3006 people will buy the products listed in this Article (It’s An Estimation)

Let’s say the Affiliate commission on the sale of each product is $6 so if 3006 people buy it;

3006 x $6 = $18,306 (Again! This Is A Probability).

Rinse and Repeat this process for other niches and you will find out the revenue you can generate.

The rest is on you.

Go through the sheet and cherry-pick the best one for you.

Choosing A Blogging Platform

There are a lot of platforms to choose from when it comes to launching your blog.

But which one should you go for?

Well, If we were to start a new blog then we would defenitely start it on WordPress.

Why?

Because wordpress powers 95% of the Websites on the internet. And more than 1.9 Million blog posts come out on their platform every day.

So if you are serious about blogging, then go with wordpress because it provides you flexibility like no other platform. Some more Pro’s of WordPress Are:-

#1 WordPress Is Super Simple To Use
#2 WordPress Is Easy To Learn, cause it has TONS of Tutorials
#3 WordPress has the best Flexibility On the market. (You Can create anything with WordPress)
#4 WordPress Is Free To Use and provides easy web development
#5 Search Engine Optimization Ready. (Unlike Wix, Blogger, Squarespace)
(Why WordPress Is Best)

Below is another video showing how awesome WordPress is.

Hosted Blogging Platfroms

Note:- These Don’t Support WordPress

These types of platforms are free and (probably) will always be free. But don’t get happy right now.

Free Hosted platforms have some serious flaws and limitations.

First of all after your domain name there will always be a sub-domain like

Yourdomain.subdomain.com

That means if your site’s name is Coolcars then it will not be like

coolcars.com

Instead it will be like,

coolcars.subdomain.com

See, that kills branding instantly.

Also, using these types of pre-hosted platforms you will not have any power of your blog. The owner of the platform can always stop or drestroy your blog.

Bottom Line?

You will always be inside a jail and have no right for yourself.

Self Hosted Blogging Platforms

This is the idle type of Hosting you should opt for.

Even our own blog is proudly Self Hosted on Bluehost.

You will also get full access to customize anything inside your site (cause it comes with free WordPress).

With just a few dollars every month you can get yourself a site which you are in full control.

If you plan to run ads, sell products, or services via your blog, then this is the best way to go. Many hosting providers can help you maintain an e-commerce blog.

Bottom Line?

Self Hosted Blog With WordPress is just;

Okay so now that you are familiar with the difference between Self-hosted Blogging Platforms and Hosted Blogging Platforms, Let’s checkout the Startup cost of a blog i.e how much money do you need to start a blog.

  • Hosting + Domain ($127 from Siteground)
  • Divi- Page Builder, Email Optin, Social sharing ($89)
  • Mangools SEO Tool ($128/year)
  • Canva ( $108 )

So in Total that’s $452 if you can’t afford it then you can just buy an one time license for Divi And A Hosting from Siteground.

Choose A Domain Name For Your Blog

Congrats, now that you have found the best niche its time to choose a good and brandable domain name.

If you have already chosen a domain name then you can skip this part.

When we started this blog we were quite unsure about what to call ourselves. We tried all the stupid names pumped out by those Random Name generators.

We wasted at least $70 on more than 10 domain names and none of them seemed right for our niche and what we wanted to accomplish with it.

We don’t want you to make the same mistakes that we made while choosing our domain name.

So here are some tips you can use to get an awesome domain name.

#1 Keep it short and simple

Long domain names are hard to spell and remember (Jon Morrow changed his blog name from BoostBlogTraffic to SmartBlogger and that increased his brandability and authority)

#2 Don’t use keywords in your Domain Name

According to Brian Dean using your main keyword in your domain name helps little to none in SEO.

While it does not harm your SEO but still we recommend not to use the main keyword in your domain name.

#3 Don’t focus on TLD extensions

TLD extensions don’t favour you in terms of SEO and also most of the .com domains are already taken. If you are struggling with finding a good domain name with .com we suggest using something else.

Here are a few things you will miss out if you skip the .com domain extension:

  1. Most People directly type Domain.com and not Domain.net
  2. Using other extensions might make your site look spammy.

But if you the domain name you can go with other TLD extensions.

#4 Avoid Copyright Infringements

When choosing a domain name always check if any other business or organization uses the same name.

Otherwise, they can claim your domain and you will lose your blog.

To check if your domain has any copyright infringement you can use a tool like EstiBot.

Just type in your domain name.

As you can see that the domain shows us, it is under copyright infringement.

We will be dividing the list into 3 parts :

  1. SEO Tools
  2. Content Creation Tools
  3. Performance Tracking Tools

Let’s dig deep in each of these toolsets.

#1 SEO Tools

To start and scale a successful blog you need to create high-quality content and promote it regularly.

And to do that you will need SEO Tools to find out content ideas, build backlinks and perform site audits.

These SEO Tools are :

  2. Link Building Tools

Keyword Research Tools

Keyword Research is the process of finding topics and queries that people are searching on Google. This is the most fundamental and crucial part of SEO.

You can find keywords using Keyword Research Tools, so let’s get started.

#1 Aherfs Keyword Explorer

Ahrefs has always been our first choice for Keyword Research. It provides you with the best keyword data and ideas on the entire planet and they update their databases regularly.

Their web crawler is second most active on the internet after Google.

Also, you will get access to their Site explorer for link building and competitive analysis, rank tracker for your rankings on google and site audit tool for fixing technical SEO issues on your site.

But is it the best tool? Not necessarily. The quality of data in SEMrush is slightly lower than Ahrefs

SEMrush also has aggressive pricing as the Ahrefs.

But the Pro plan starts at $99 per month and compared to Ahrefs the limits are higher with over 3000 searches per week.

Interested? Read this Review or Buy SEMrush now.
